Rookie Moms: More Fun than Wiping Someone’s Tushy

“You can’t stay in your pajamas all day just because you are on maternity leave,” is something your best friend or mom should tell you. But if your good friend doesn’t have the heart or you just won’t listen to your MIL, Rookie Moms will be the friend that says what they can’t. Rookie Moms was conceived from the advice one mom gives another by moms, Whitney and Heather.

In 2005, having been through the experience of wondering what to do with herself on maternity leave, Whitney had told new mom, Heather “how important it is for new moms to get out of the house every day and conquer the basic skills of going out for lunch, running errands, and socializing — all with baby in tow.”

The two friends started an excel spreadsheet of activities that could be done with baby during the first year of motherhood. By the time Heather returned to work that fall, the list became the Rookie Moms blog, which would bring their friendship and advice to a community on the web. Because according to Whitney and Heather “sometimes a mom just needs to be told what to do.”

As friends and partners they have each other to bounce ideas off of and they say they keep each other in check in regards to their commitment to authenticity on the site. They also get to have fun and meet other mamas. “The comments are very meaningful to us. Although we are out of our rookie year, hearing from someone who’s in it takes us right back there.”

Five sites they adore and would share with their friends are: http://mom-101.blogspot.com, http://www.parenthacks.com, http://craftingagreenworld.com, http://caleyadams.wordpress.com, and http://simplemom.net.rookiemomsbook

What started out as a list of things to do for the first year has now expanded to a blog of activities for the first few years of motherhood and their book, The Rookie Mom’s Hand Book.

A new mom may not plan to get out her pajamas but she doesn’t have to to see the list of activities on the site. Rookie Moms says they have lots of plans for the future but for now are “just taking it day by day and trying to keep finding more activities that are more fun than wiping someone’s tushy.”
