What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?
Sometimes I get overwhelmed by the idea that all of the cars I’m passing on the highway, all of the people standing in line with me at the grocery store, all of the human beings I encounter casually or deeply every day — all of them have a story. They have parents, and a first love, and a critical wound that drives them. They had to decide to buy the clothes they are wearing and the food in their baskets and the cars they are driving. They all have stories. So I imagine what they are, and that inspires my creativity as a storyteller.
What do you most dislike?
I loathe it when people sit around and complain about where they are, and how they are, and who they are, and then they fail to do anything about those things. Everyone can and should wallow in a why-me quagmire every once in a while and for short periods. After that, do something or shut up about it already.
Who are your favorite characters in history?
As a fiction reader and writer, my mind didn’t go to real characters but those made-up ones. I love Laura Ingalls Wilder as a writer and as a character. I love Jo from Little Women and Jane Eyre. I fall in love with characters in books, and they are the ones who have shaped me, rather than historical figures.
What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?

What is the best thing about BlogHer events?
I can’t wait to find out! As a fluke, I signed up for the BlogHer 09 waitlist and just scored a ticket. It will be my first time.
I imagine that the best thing will be getting inspired by all the women who are using the Internet to lift up themselves and other women. And learning how to make my blog better, more focused, more meaningful to my readers.
What do you most fear about attending BlogHer ’09?
Since I currently have nowhere to sleep, I’m afraid I’ll be sleeping on a park bench! I’ve been joking that I’ll stand in the hotel lobby with a sign (Help! Need a Bed!) and a plate of cookies in hopes of recruiting a place to crash.
I’m not easily intimidated by the unknown, and I like meeting new people, and I’m not shy, so I’m not really afraid.
How would you like to die?
Quickly and painlessly. And old. Really old.
